A rectangle labeled as “Senior Designer Domain” with another rectangle within. In the smaller rectangle there are many circles. One circle is named “Core Junior Designer Skills” and the other circles are labeled as “Junior++ skill”. The smaller rectangle has a dotted border. The Junior++ skils are slightly protruding out of the smaller rectangle and into the area of the bigger rectangle.
Illustrating how junior++ skills slowly expand the skillset of the junior designer, thus putting them a little bit more in the senior designer domain over time.

I recently chanced upon Brian Lovin’s podcast episode on Senior++ Designer Expectations on “non-obvious paths to level up at work”. While the gap between a junior and a senior product designer is vague and huge at times (depending on where you’re applying to be a senior), it got me to think about how juniors could level up at work beyond their day-to-day deliverables, especially places with clearly-defined skill clusters.
